How often should dog grooming clients rebook? A coat-by-coat guide

Regular clients are the backbone of a solo grooming business, and the easiest way to keep them regular is to agree on a rhythm early. Here are common starting points by coat type, and how to turn them into standing appointments.

These are starting points, not rules. Each dog’s coat, lifestyle, season and the owner’s preferences decide the right interval, and your own experience beats any chart.

Starting intervals by coat type

CoatTypical examplesCommon starting interval
Curly, continuously growingPoodles, doodles, BichonsEvery 4 to 6 weeks
Long, silkyShih Tzus, Maltese, YorkiesEvery 4 to 6 weeks
Double coatGolden Retrievers, Huskies, CorgisEvery 6 to 8 weeks, more often in shedding season
Short, smoothPugs, Labradors, BeaglesEvery 6 to 8 weeks
Wire coatMany terriers and schnauzersEvery 6 to 8 weeks

Puppies are different: shorter, more frequent visits in the first months help them get used to the dryer, the table and being handled.

Rebook before you leave

The best moment to book the next visit is the one you are standing in the driveway. The owner is pleased, the dog looks great, and the date is easy to say yes to. Offer one or two specific options rather than an open question: “Same time in six weeks, Tuesday the 12th?”

Offer a standing slot

“Every sixth Tuesday at 10:00” is easy to remember and easy for you to protect. Standing slots also make your week predictable: you can see months ahead which blocks are already spoken for, and plan your zones around them.

Adjust when the coat tells you to

Keep the notes that make the next visit easy

Write down the clip, the blade or comb you used, the dog’s mood, the owner’s preferences, the gate code and where to park. The next visit takes less time, and clients notice when you remember.
